Description Latin: Cornus racemosa Zones: 3-8 Other common names: western dogwood, gray stemmed dogwood, panicled dogwood Mature Height/spread: 10-15 ft. high/ 10-15 ft. spread. Slow growth rate (less than 12″ per year). Soil / Climate:  Gray Dogwood is tolerant of both moist and dry sites.  Prefers partial shade. Ranges from Maine to Manitoba. Notes: Leaves are narrow to oval, 1 to 5 inches long.  Autumn color is dull red.  Fruit is white 1/4 inch berries on red stalks, and persists until early winter. Wildlife: The fruit and buds are a favorite food of the ruffed grouse, turkey, and bobwhite.  Pheasant, woodcock, and many other birds will use dogwood for food and cover.
